O Elvas were eliminated from the Portuguese Cup in the round of 16, after an exciting game against Santa Clara, decided on penalties. The match, held at Campo Domingos Carrilho Patalino, ended in a draw in regulation time and only saw goals during extra time.
CD Santa Clara, who plays in League 2, opened the scoring in the 95th minute with a goal from Gabriel Silva. However, the blue and gold club showed resilience and tied the match in the 115th minute, with a header from Colombian César Medina, following a corner kick.
With the tie persisting until the end of extra time, the tie was decided on penalties. César Medina, who had scored the equalizer, saw his shot saved by Marcos Díaz, Santa Clara’s goalkeeper. Desmond Nketia also failed to convert his penalty. Adriano Firmino scored the decisive penalty for Santa Clara, sealing the Azorean team’s passage to the round of 16.
